The History of
The Villages At Lynx Creek Computer Club

In the beginning
a few residents of The Villages who were interested in computers
got together to talk about them. That’s all they could do as
they didn’t have any computers for “hands on” experience.
Eventually, an old computer was donated and fixed up by a few of
the members which enabled them to gain actual computer
experience.
In 1994 a
Computer Club was formed, which is open to all residents, with
Kaylor Ross as the first president. Until March 11, 2003,
regular meetings were held twice a month. At that time they were
changed to once a month and held on the second Tuesday of the
month.
Membership is $12.00 a year and includes
spouse, if married and cover 12 months starting June 1.
Residents who move to the valley during the winter only pay for
the months they reside at the Villages. Residents are welcome to
attend a meeting at no cost to see if they want to join the
Computer Club. Although membership is restricted to Village
residents, if they have visitors they are allowed to bring them
as a guest.
In 1995, Kaylor went to the developer
and suggested that the Computer Club do the Village Crier
(newsletter) so members could gain experience using their own
computer; the developer agreed.
HOAMCO, a
management company, hired by the Developer, arbitrarily took
over the newsletter in 1996. About a year later the chairman of
the transition board (Jim Lehman) came to a computer club
meeting and said that HOAMCO had informed him that the manager
would no longer do the Village Crier. He then asked that
the Computer Club consider once again publishing the newsletter.
The club members agreed for a monthly fee which is paid to the
Computer Club. The members who do the newsletter are not paid.
All the money is used to upgrade equipment, buy software and pay
for classes given by outside instructors.
In 1998 Kaylor
Ross moved from the Villages and Mark Dyer was elected president
and held office until May 13, 2003.
In 2001 the
Computer Club decided that The Villages at Lynx Creek should
have a Web Site to get information about the planned social
activities to residents while they are away, and to let
potential home buyers know about this wonderful adult
community.
When Mark Dyer
resigned as the Computer Club president none of the members
wanted to take over as president. The members decided that the
computer club provides an important benefit to the community,
i.e., edits and performs layouts for the monthly newsletter;
started and maintains the web site for The Villages and is a
meeting place for Village residents to discuss and learn about
computers. It was determined that the functions of the club
should be continued by the members until such time a volunteer
is found to assume the roll of president of the club. Jack
Gunter served as acting President from May 2003 to April 2009.
On April 14,
2009, Paul Butzien was elected President of the Computer Club.
The name has been changed to Village Computer User's Group (VCUG).
There will no longer be a fee to join the club. The VCUG
meetings will be free to all residents of the Villages. Everyone
is welcome to come and learn and share their knowledge with
others. The meetings will be weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30 AM to
10:30 AM.
The idea is with many users attending, someone usually has had
the same problem or similar experience and can offer positive
help to the one having the problem and thus, we all benefit from
the help offered.

Village Computer User's Group (VCUG), the Web Site, or
